A woman is facing possible criminal charges in connection with a blaze at an apartment complex on the city’s far west side.

The blaze was reported at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the building in the 600 block of 39th Avenue. By the time crews arrived heavy smoke and flames poured from the second story of the complex, which was significantly damaged in the blaze.

Witnesses at the scene told Wausau Pilot and Review the fire could have been electrical in nature. But according to the Wausau Police Department, investigators later determined otherwise and referred a woman to the District Attorney’s office for possible charges of negligent handling of burning materials, a class A misdemeanor.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which remains under investigation. The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
