WAUSAU – Three Aspirus hospitals were recognized by University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation for their organ and tissue performance in 2018.
Aspirus Wausau Hospital earned the Award of Hope (Bronze), while Aspirus Langlade Hospital and Aspirus Riverview Hospital each earned the Excellence in Tissue Donation award, Aspirus announced this week.
The UW Organ and Tissue Donation Award of Hope recognizes the comprehensive work of hospitals that achieve or exceed the goals of two important measures that maximize the gift of life: the true conversion rate , which measures the percent of medically eligible donors that become actual donors; and organs transplanted per donor, which measures the average number of organs recovered from each donor.
The Excellence in Tissue Donation award was given to Wisconsin Tissue Bank partner hospitals who achieved at least a 60 percent tissue donation consent rate. This metric measures the collaborative work between the hospital staff and tissue bank in coordinating communication around tissue donation consent conversations.
“The staff at the participating Aspirus facilities takes pride saving and improving lives through organ and tissue donation,” said Michael McGrail, MD, Aspirus system chief medical officer, in an Aspirus news release. “We are proud of the role we play in helping patients give the gift of life to others in our communities.”
All of the recognized Aspirus facilities will participate in Donate Life Wisconsin’s Pause to Give Life event on April 1. Aspirus facilities will raise Donate Life flags at the same time to highlight the fact that one donor can save eight lives.
