STEVENS POINT — The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra closes its 70th season with “Maestro’s Farewell” and says farewell to its longtime conductor.
Patrick Miles, conductor of the CWSO, will conduct his final concert April 13 and 14 with the orchestra after serving as the music director for 17 years. The orchestra will commemorate Miles’ time as music director by performing works by two of his favorite composers, Ludwig van Beethoven and Gustav Mahler.
The concert will open with “Overture to Prometheus” by Ludwig van Beethoven, from his only ballet The Creatures of Prometheus. It will conclude with “Symphony No. 1? by Johannes Brahms, honoring Beethoven’s legacy in four movements, which took nearly 20 years to complete from start to finish.
In choosing these works for his final concert with the CWSO, Miles said that they “embody everything I love about orchestral music: wonderful solos, lush string writing and powerful brass. Those are all things that shaped my career as a hornist and conductor.”
The concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 13 and 4 p.m. April 14 at Sentry Theater, 1800 Northpoint Drive, Stevens Point.
