Thompson, East down Merrill

Merrill — Wausau East got three goals and an assist from sophomore forward Abby Thompson and as a consequence also picked up an opening win in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, downing the Merrill Blue Jays 4-1 Tuesday.

Thompson got her first goal on an assist from junior teammate Emma Dehnel at the 12:32 mark, then picked up her own assist exactly five minutes later when she found sophomore Dulce Nave in scoring range.

Freshman Lily Messman then assisted on Thompson’s second goal in the 29th minute, making it 3-0 at halftime.

Thompson scored an unassisted goal in the 64th minute to make it 4-0.  That score held up until Merrill freshman midfielder McKenna Smith picked up an unassisted strike at the 87:49 mark to close out the scoring.

Alexis Tate had a pair of saves in goal for the Lumberjacks, while Merrill’s Kaylee Bowe had 5.
