State and federal officials say at least four pet dogs were fatally poisoned in northern Wisconsin, along with coyotes, raccoons, weasels and a wolf.
The animals were found sporadically since December in Bayfield, Marinette and Florence Counties, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
According to the DNR, poison was found on the ground on public properties managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Goodman Timber Company. Officials say the dogs each died within 30 minutes of ingesting the poisoned meat..
In all four cases where the dogs died, the poisoned meat was found in a road ditch, officials said.
The DNR is now prompting dog owners to keep pets on a leash and away from roadside ditches.
Samples of the meat were sent to the Wisconsin Crime Lab for testing.
