PORTAGE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of Wisconsin State Patrol, is investigating officer involved deaths following a vehicle crash that took place early Monday on I-39, according to a news release.

The crash happened at about 7:48 a.m. Monday, April 29 in the southbound lanes of I-39/Hwy. 51.

Police say the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Portage Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol were attempting to locate and contact a vehicle believed to be carrying an individual suspected of a kidnapping attempt in Marathon County.

The suspect’s vehicle crashed into the back of a semi-trailer, police said. The driver and one passenger in the suspect’s vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

DCI is assisted by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office. Wisconsin State Patrol, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and Portage Police Department have been fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.

No additional details have been released including the names or ages of the people involved.
