BIRNAMWOOD, Wis. — A brush fire that burned nearly five acres last week in the town of Birnamwood is one of numerous fires that cropped up over the past week in central Wisconsin, according to fire officials.
Fire danger has been downgraded in the area thanks to wet conditions and recent rains but fire officials are continuing to warn of potential hazards with rapidly changing conditions possible.
In the Birnamwood fire, a call from a passer-by regarding a column of smoke came to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department just before 11 a.m. on April 24. The blaze was located at N8211 Maplewood Road in Birnamwood, where an active flame was headed from the forested area to Birnamwood Road.
According to the Shawano Leader, multiple fire agencies responded and ultimately used a bulldozer to trech-stop the fire from spreading.
More than three dozen wildfires were reported statewide over the past week, according to the Department of Natural Resources. Three of those fires were in Marathon County.
One wildfire was reported Tuesday, April 30 in Waushara County; that scene remained active as of 10:45 a.m., according to the DNR. Wisconsin typically sees high fire danger from early March through mid-May, officials said.
