The Aging & Disability Resource Center of Portage County will host events related to dementia throughout Dementia Awareness Week in mid May.

Events begin on May 11 with Reelin’ in the Memories, a free fishing event for Portage County residents with dementia and their caregivers. Equipment and lunch are provided.

Free memory screens will be offered on May 13, by appointment.

On May 14, Michelle Reinen, director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, will discuss scams and fraud targeting seniors.

An inspirational caregiver presentation by Brian and Anne Reece will be given on May 15. They will talk about early onset Alzheimer’s disease and how they are changing the public’s perception of dementia. Virtual dementia tours will be given from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The tours are an individual experience through simulated dementia created for families, organizations and companies seeking to better understand the physical and mental challenges of those with dementia.

On May 17, everyone is encouraged to wear purple in support of Alzheimer’s disease.
