WAUSAU – May is National Trauma Awareness Month and Aspirus Wausau Hospital is reminding everyone to take this time to always be safe around firearms.

May has been designated as Trauma Awareness Month since it was established by President Ronald Reagan and Congress in 1988. This year’s focus is on firearm injury prevention. Deaths and injuries caused by firearms can happen in any community, to anyone, at any time. Some of the focus areas include hunting safety, suicide and bleeding control.

“Trauma is unexpected and can impact every single one of us. Trauma awareness month reminds everyone to make safe choices every day in order to avoid the negative effects of trauma,” said Sara Steen, trauma program manager.
