TOWN OF WESTON – Police have confirmed that two people died Wednesday in a head-on crash just east of Wausau on Hwy. N.

The crash, about a half-mile east of Hwy. X, happened at about 3:30 p.m. on April 30. Rescue crews from SAFER initially responded to the scene but called for assistance from Ringle upon arrival.

At 3:40 p.m. a helicopter was summoned to the crash site but an available aircraft could not be secured until 3:55 p.m. The helicopter was set to arrive at the scene by 4:10 p.m. but was called off.

Police say two vehicles were involved.

Initial, unconfirmed scanner reports suggest one person was ejected from a vehicle. One person, a female, was trapped inside a vehicle and needed extrication.

At least one victim is a teenager, Wausau Pilot and Review has learned.

Investigators from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Everest Metro Police Department remained at the scene at 4:35 p.m. and a portion of CTH N, or Townline Road, remained closed to traffic for hours after the crash. Phillips Road.

The names and ages of the victims are expected to be released later today, Wednesday. Wausau Pilot and Review will not publish the names of victims until cleared by law enforcement, to allow for notification of family members.
