Wausau–The visiting Wisconsin Rapids Red Raiders baseball team turned in a nearly flawless performance as they beat Wausau West 8-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Pitchers Eric Steinhilber and Nate Kromenakker combined on a four hitter and combined with solid defense and timely hitting, the Raiders won going away against a young but scrappy Warrior squad.

Cody Bredl drove in the first Rapids run with a one out single to score Jacob Wiplfli in the top of the first for the first lead.

West’s lefty Mitch Zahurones then settled down and was effective with two strikeouts in the second inning and battled through five plus innings, but giving up runs in every other innings. He was scoreless in the second and fourth, but was touched up in the other frames.

West had a scoring opportunity in the second and with runners on second and third but could not scrape out a run.

Rapids scored two runs in the third on a run scoring double by Cody Bredl, followed by a hard hit infield ball by Tyler Beyer.

Steinhilber was efficient in the middle innings only giving singles in the third through fifth frames.

Rapids scored two in the fifth inning on another single by Bredl who was driven home by Josh Zwicke, who scored on a single by Garrett Huber.

West had another chance to get on the board in the fifth, when Jake Bailey singled and Zahurones walked. But an over aggressive base running play ended the Warrior threat.

Rapids put the game away in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs when Zwicke drove in two after two errors and a walk set the table.
