Authorities in Minnesota say skeletal remains found in April in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are human. Efforts are underway to identify the remains, which were found at a campsite belonging to an experienced outdoorsman who planned to spend the winter in the woods.
Police say Jordan Grider, of Moriarty, N.M., gave his family the general location where he would be and sent photos from the campsite.
Officers from the U.S. Forest Service and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources discovered Grider’s vehicle in October at the trailhead to the Sioux Hustler Trail, which winds around several lakes. Searchers were unable to find his campsite in October.
In April, officers returned to the area and discovered a campsite about 2 miles from the entrance of Echo Trail with a large amount of blood inside a tent. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad determined Grider had indeed camped at the site, but they were unable to locate the man.
Deep snow hampered the search and forced investigators to cease searching for about three weeks. At that time, they discovered remains scattered across a large area near the campsite, according to police.
Foul play is not suspected.
