Husband of missing woman held on $2 million bond

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Facing homicide charges, the husband of a woman reported missing six years ago is being held on a $2 million cash bond.

James M. Prokopovitz, 73, is accused of killing his wife, 60-year-old Victoria Prokopovitz, who was last seen at 10 p.m. April 25, 2013, at her home at 5118 Kunish Road in Pittsfield. She was reported missing the next day by her husband, who allegedly told police he suspected his wife committed suicide.

Police say Victoria Prokopovitz left behind her purse, ID, money, and cell phone. Her body has never been found and police have long suspected foul play in her disappearance.

The Green Bay Press Gazette reports that prosecutors, during a probable cause hearing Thursday, told a court commissioner that James Prokopovitz admitted in 2013 that he killed his wife, but later recanted his story.

James Prokopovitz’s girlfriend, 67-year-old Kathryn M. Friday, is also facing obstruction and perjury charges in the case. Friday is being held on a $25,000 cash bond.

Police say James Prokopovitz and Friday were romantically involved and lied repeatedly to investigators about their relationship. Investigators also say James Prokopovitz benefited monetarily by his wife’s death.

Prosecutors have until May 22 to file official charges against the pair.
