Everest girls close out regular season with 5-0 win

Weston — D.C. Everest closed out another championship regular season with a 5-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference win over Merrill Thursday.

The Evergreens (19-1-2, 11-0-1 WVC) got three goals from Maddie Simpson and one from Meghan Heil to close out the regular season. Their conference crown was Everest’s sixth in the last seven years.

Ranked No. 5 in the final state coaches’ poll for Division 1, Everest will take on Eau Claire North in the first round of the state playoffs in Weston Tuesday.

Everest took a 1-0 lead on an own goal by Merrill in the 5th minute. Simpson then got a goal in the 8th minute off an Elle Hersperger assist.

In the 14th, Sarah Lorge assisted Heil on her goal to give Everest a 3-0 lead. Lorge also assisted on the final two goals from Simpson, which came in the 45th and 89th minutes, respectively.

Kaylee Bowe had eight saves for Merrill, while Sonja Budleski had a quiet night in goal for the Evergreens, getting no save chances.
