An alleged threat on social media regarding John Muir Middle School in Wausau has no credibility, according to school officials.

Parents and guardians of John Muir Middle School students on Tuesday received an email stating that the Wausau Police Department has concluded the investigation. Police were notified Monday of a rumor reported to the district in which a Snapchat poster claimed to have heard that “John mirror is getting shot up on Tuesday.”

After the Snapchat profile name was blocked out, a screenshot image of the content was shared and spread on Facebook before being reported to the social media outlet

School officials say the rumor was just that: a rumor. “There was no credibility of a threat,” the Tuesday email to parents read. The email was sent at 12:40 p.m., one day after the investigation began.

“The students involved with the rumor span multiple school districts,” school officials said. “The students indicate they did this as a joke, and they will face disciplinary action.”

Classes were held at John Muir on Tuesday as scheduled and the Wausau Police Department issued a news release thanking students, parents, and staff for coming forward.

“Our School Resource Officers look forward to welcoming and supporting students today and forward,” the Wausau Police Department release states. “Thank you to students, parents and school staff for keeping Community Policing alive in our schools—this investigation was greatly assisted and expedited by those coming forward with information.”
