WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

Two men were cited for discharging a firearm in the city and arrested on disorderly conduct charges in a “case of late night target shooting,” according to Wausau Deputy Police Chief Matt Barnes.

Witnesses tell Wausau Pilot and Review they heard dozens of gunshots starting at about 3:30 a.m. on the city’s east side. The two men, both young adults, cooperated with police when officers arrived on scene.

One resident who lives in the neighborhood said he and his family were kept awake for hours not knowing what led to the gunshots — or what was being done about them.

“It was terrifying,” he said.

Wausau Police Capt. Todd Baeten said officers were dispatched at about 3:40 a.m. to a large wooded area between the 1900 block of Stark Street and Woodbury Parkway for a report of multiple shots fired. Due to the unknown origin of the shots, offices did not immediately enter the area, but continued to monitor and attempt to isolate the source, which was identified as a residence in the 1900 block of Stark St. The men admitted to shooting north from the backyard of the residence at a tree just inside the wooded area, Baeten said.

No one was injured.

Officials are reminding anyone who hears gunshots or witnesses suspicious activity to call police.
