WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

Police in Wausau are reminding drivers that posted road closures are there for a reason.

Two drivers wound up stuck in the construction zone on Thomas Street over the weekend after trying to drive through the mud, according to Facebook posts by the Wausau Police Department.

On Saturday, after the first car was stuck, the department posted a warning on the WPD Facebook page.

“When City of Wausau Department of Public Works posts signs saying “Road Closed” they really mean it,” the post reads. “This driver chose to ignore said signs, go for it, and get stuck. This led to a tow bill, a traffic citation, and Officer Kaetterhenry needing a good boot dryer.”

About 30 drivers were stopped on Saturday alone as they attempted to drive across the Thomas Street Bridge, police said. The bridge, along with a section of Thomas Street from the Wisconsin River to Fourth Avenue, is closed this summer due to construction.
