Everest’s season cut short

Weston — No. 6 seed Appleton North upset No. 3 seed D.C. Everest on the Evergreens’ home turf Saturday, getting an 85th-minute goal from Abbie Schaefer to take a 3-2 win.

Everest, the fifth-ranked team in Wisconsin’s Division 1, ends its season at 20-2-2.

Everest fell behind in the 14th on Isabel Batley’s unassisted goal for Appleton North, but got a 29th-minute goal from Maria Esker on a Maddie Simpson assist to tie the game.

Simpson then got an assist from Keta Oettinger to give the Evergreens a 2-1 lead in the 43rd, but North struck back quickly when Schaefer got an unassisted goal in the 44th to leave the score tied 2-2 at halftime.

Schaefer’s game-winner was also unassisted.

Everest was able to put more shots on goal couldn’t finish out. Grace Sprangers finished with eight saves for North, while Sonja Budleski had three for Everest.

Appleton North, which lost to Everest 4-2 at Everest on May 11, now travels to Bay Port, the No. 2 seed in the 16-team Sectional 1, for a Thursday game. Bay Port, the defending state champ in Division 1, was a 2-0 winner over No. 7 seed De Pere Saturday.
