EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — A mother who was driving when her vehicle crashed in April near St. Germain, injuring her three children, now faces felony charges connected to the crash.
Karen Ives, 51, faces three counts of OWI causing injury in a case filed this week in Vilas County Circuit Court. She is due in court June 17 for an initial appearance on the charges.
Police say Ives had a preliminary breath test result of 0.258, more than three times the 0.08 limit for driving in Wisconsin, shortly after the crash.
According to a WJFW report deputies were called at 4:40 p.m. on April 22 to the single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 70 and discovered Ives and her 6-year-old daughter thrown from the vehicle. Ives’ two sons were also injured in the crash; all four survived. When he arrived at the scene, the father of the children asked police to check Ives for alcohol.
WJFW reports that medics took Ives and the three children to Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff for treatment. While there, Ives allegedly admitted to a deputy she had been drinking.
Judge Neal Nielsen set a $1,000 signature bond for Ives on Monday. She must stay sober and cannot be in a bar except while working at the “Kaig Stand,” a tavern she owns in St. Germain.
Ives is currently free on a signature bond.
