The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for counties in north central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood.

The following updates are for the week of June 17. Construction schedules are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress:

Green Lake and Waushara counties

Highway 49

Location: Highway 23 to South Street (Green Lake to Berlin)

Schedule: May 13 to Oct. 15

Traffic impacts: Shoulders will be closed at various locations in addition to intermittent flagging operations throughout the length of the project. Turn lanes at Highway AA (east and west), Highway V, and the climbing lane at Highway V will be closed for reconstruction.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Remove, grade and prepare the turning lane at Highway AA, east and westbound. Guardrail work at Highway V, Highway A and Springbrook Road. Remove, grade and prepare the turn lane/climbing lane at Highway V, sawing operations at Highway V, Highway A and Springbrook Road. Remove, grade and prepare the turn lane/climbing lane at Highway V.

Green Lake County

Highway 91

Location: Berlin city limits to west Winnebago County line

Schedule: This project was completed on June 10


Lincoln County

Highway 64 (Bridge Maintenance)

Location: Bridge over the Prairie River, city of Merrill

Schedule: May 14 to early August 2019

Traffic impacts: Traffic control will be removed by end of day June 14.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crack sealing of pier footing, rip-rap placement around the piers if water levels remain low. Pavement marking application throughout the project limits and removal of traffic control devices.

Highway 86

Location: Between Price County line (Highway YY) and the Wisconsin River Bridge in Tomahawk

Schedule: June 12 to Oct. 17

Traffic impacts: Traffic on Highway 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of flaggers during pavement sawing operations.  All traffic lanes will be opened at the end of each work day. The full closure from Highway O to Highway E, for culvert and cable barrier replacements, has been pushed back to July 15.

Detour: Traffic will be detoured via Highway 13, Highway 8, and Highway 51. Local traffic will be allowed as signed.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Placement of traffic control signs, staking, pavement sawing and culver pipe installation.


Marathon County

Highway WW

Location: Wisconsin River Bridge, Brokaw (village of Maine)

Schedule: April 22 to May 22, 2020

Traffic impacts: Due to inclement weather, pouring of concrete and the full closure previously scheduled for June 14-17 has been delayed until June 21. Traffic is still maintained on a single lane, 10.5 feet in width, on the existing bridge with temporary traffic signals.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Contractors will continue to prepare bridge for concrete pouring.


Marquette County

Highway 22

Location: Main and Montello streets, Fifth Street to N Junction Highway 23

Schedule: April 30 – July

Traffic Impacts: Pier work on the Montello and Fox River bridges begins on June 17. Motorists can expect to encounter periodic flagging operations that will temporarily close a single lane over both bridges at times during this work.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Scour mitigation work is planned for the center pier of the Montello River and Fox River bridges.

Highway 23

Location: Montello

Schedule: April 15 to Nov. 15

Traffic impacts: Highway 23 is closed from West Street to Lake Street. Lake Street and Highway 23 intersection is closed. Maps of local detours are posted at the website below.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will pour curb and gutter, pour concrete for outfall basin, complete excavation for outfall basin (weather permitting), final grading and seeding of outfall basin (weather permitting) and begin water main and sanitary sewer work at intersection of Lake Street and Highway 23.

Oneida County

Highway 51

Location: Between Minocqua Bridge to Lakeshore Drive in downtown Minocqua

Schedule: This project has been completed.

Highways 8 and 47 intersection

Location: Rhinelander

Schedule: June 10 to Oct. 18

Traffic impacts: Flagging operations, single lane and shoulder closures. Project detour is anticipated to begin on June 24.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Traffic control preparation for the detour route. The detour route will also be prepped with asphalt milling, replacement and patching as well as gravel placement on the detour route shoulders.

Oneida and Vilas counties

Highway 51

Location: Third Avenue to Tuckaway Drive

Schedule: Spring 2018 to November 2019

Traffic impacts: Highway 51 will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction between Highway 47 and Trapp Road. Traffic on Highway 51 will be restricted to a 12-foot maximum width. Motorists should expect to encounter occasional flagging operations. Motorists are encouraged to consider using Highway 47 as an alternate route to avoid delays at peak tourist travel times.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will pave asphalt roadway, terrace, driveways and parking lots. Crews will apply permanent pavement markings.

Portage County

Business Highway 51

Location: Mac Arthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: March 18 to spring 2020

Anticipated work scheduled for next weekCrews will:

  • Continue work on the local utility facilities on Tommy’s Turnpike
  • Work to complete the concrete terrace from Beech Street to Minnesota Avenue on the east side of Business Highway 51
  • Work to complete the sidewalk on Highway HH from Lower Whiting Park to Locust Street
  • Work to install the curb and gutter on Elm, Willow and Cedar streets on the east side of Business Highway 51
  • Work to install the curb and gutter for the cul-de-sacs on Beech and Locust streets
  • Work to complete the installation of the remaining driveways on the east side of Business Highway 51 on Highway HH

Waupaca County

Highway 22 bridges

Location: Wautoma – Clintonville, at bridges over:

(1) South Branch of the Little Wolf River

(2) Crystal River and

(3) Wisconsin Central Ltd. (CN) RR tracks

Schedule: May 14 to Aug. 2

Traffic impacts: Northbound lane closures on all three bridges. Highway 22 will remain open to traffic in both directions. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and temporary traffic signals.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews plan to perform more prep work for bridge three deck pour. Asphalt paving is tentatively scheduled with a traffic switch tentatively scheduled for the end of next week.

Highway 156

Location: Highway 22 to Shawano County Line

Schedule: June 10 – September 2019

Traffic impacts: Highway 156 will remain open to a minimum of one lane of traffic at all times. Temporary traffic signals will be used on the bridge over the Wolf River.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: The contractor will finish installing containment, begin removal of the existing paint and start repainting girders on the Highway 156 Wolf River Bridge.


Wood County

Highway 97 (Central Avenue)

Location: Between Arnold Street and Harrison Street, city of Marshfield

Schedule: May 1 to Aug, 29

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter one-lane traffic in each direction on Highway 97 between Arnold Street and Harrison Street. Crews will be working on the inside travel lanes of Highway 97 between Arnold and Harrison streets. Pedestrian access to businesses and schools will be maintained during construction.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Grading operations and prep work for the concrete base. Crews will finish placing concrete at the base patches and the concrete base at the median.

Crews will continue working on traffic loops and installation of concrete bases for signals at the median islands.

Highway 186

Location: Bridge over Hemlock Creek, village of Vesper

Schedule: June 17 to mid-July

Traffic impacts:  The north shoulder will be closed. There will also be some short-term lane closures with flaggers present.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will move into the area. Erosion control will be installed and concrete areas schedule for repair will be cleaned.
