The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for counties in north central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood.

The following updates are for the week of June 24. Construction schedules are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.

Green Lake and Waushara counties

Highway 49

Location: Highway 23 to South Street (Green Lake to Berlin)

Schedule: May 13 to Oct. 15

Traffic impacts: Shoulders will be closed at various locations in addition to intermittent flagging operations throughout the length of the project. Turn lanes at Highway AA (east and west), Highway V and the climbing lane at Highway V will be closed for reconstruction.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: (Grading and removal work was pushed back a week. This list of work remains the same for next week.) Remove, grade and prepare the turning lane at Highway AA, east and westbound. Guardrail work at Highway V, Highway A and Springbrook Road. Remove, grade and prepare the turn lane/climbing lane at Highway V, sawing operations at Highway V, Highway A and Springbrook Road. Remove, grade and prepare the turn lane/climbing lane at Highway V.

Langlade County

Highway 64

Location: Fifth Avenue Road to Highway P

Schedule: Work is scheduled to begin on July 1

Traffic impacts: Highway 64 will remain open to through traffic at all times. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during daylight hours with flagging operations.  Motorists should be aware that lane shifts will be required at the culvert replacement areas while culvert work is taking place.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Work is scheduled to begin July 1. During the first week of construction, crews plan to set up traffic and erosion control throughout the project. Crews will then begin constructing the lane shift at the planned culvert location near the east end of the project.


Lincoln County

Highway 64 (Bridge Maintenance)

Location: Bridge over the Prairie River, City of Merrill

Schedule: May 14 to early August 2019

Traffic impacts: All lane closures have been removed.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will be on site to perform crack sealing of pier footing. Rip-rap placement will occur around the piers if water levels remain low.

Highway 86

Location: Between Price County line (Highway YY) and the Wisconsin River Bridge in Tomahawk

Schedule: June 12 to Oct. 17

Traffic impacts: Traffic on Highway 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of flaggers during pavement sawing operations. All traffic lanes will be opened at the end of each work day. The full closure from Highway O to Highway E, for culvert and cable barrier replacements is still scheduled for July 15.

Detour: Traffic will be detoured via Highway 13, Highway 8, and Highway 51. Local traffic will be allowed as signed.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Staking and culvert pipe installation.


Marathon County

Highway 153

Location: Andrys Lane to Highway J north

Schedule: July 8, 2018 with completion on Aug. 1

Traffic impacts: Highway 153 will be open to through traffic at all times for the duration of this project. The project shall be constructed under traffic with the use of flagging operations.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: There is no work scheduled until July 8.


Marquette County

Highway 22

Location: Main and Montello Streets, Fifth Street to N Junction Highway 23

Schedule: April 30 – July

Traffic Impacts: Pier work on the Montello and Fox River bridges began on June 17 and continues until July 31. Motorists can expect to encounter periodic flagging operations that will temporarily close a single lane over both bridges at times during this work.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Scour mitigation work is planned for the center pier of the Montello River and Fox River bridges.

Highway 23

Location: City of Montello

Schedule: April 15 to Nov. 15

Traffic impacts: Highway 23 is closed from West Street to Park Street. Maps of local detours are posted at the website below.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Install water main and storm sewer and base aggregate at intersection of Lake Street and Highway 23.

Highways 82 and 23

Location: Highway 82 (Adams/Marquette County line to Fandrich Street and Abbott Street to Interstate-39), Highway 23 (I-39 to Eighth Court)

Schedule: June 18 to Aug. 30

Traffic impacts:

  • A five-day detour of Highway 82 will be required to replace the railroad crossing and deteriorated culverts.
  • Highway 82 will be closed at the railroad on the east side of Oxford, between Abbott street and Highway I (Depot street), from June 24 to June 28
  • There will be a signed detour route utilizing Highway 13, Highway 21 and I-39 / Highway 51

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Culvert replacements within the railroad closure. Union Pacific will complete their work on the crossing at Highway 82.


Oneida County

Highway 8 and Highway 47 intersection

Location: City of Rhinelander

Schedule: June 10 to Oct. 18

Traffic impacts: Flagging operations, single lane and shoulder closures. Project detour is anticipated to begin on June 24. Map of detour can be found here: https://go.usa.gov/xyxEK

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Excavation and installation of rock trenches in the east, west, and north legs of the Highway 8 and Highway 47 intersection. Westbound Kemp Street will continue to be paved.

Oneida and Vilas Counties

Highway 51

Location: Third Avenue to Tuckaway Drive

Schedule: Spring 2018 to November 2019

Traffic impacts: Highway 51 is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction between Highway 47 and Trapp Road until June 28. Highway 51 is scheduled to be reopened to four lanes of traffic by June 28. Beginning July 8, Highway 51 will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Wallace Road to Highway 70. Traffic on Highway 51 is restricted to a 12-foot maximum width. Motorists should expect to encounter occasional flagging operations. Motorists are encouraged to consider using Highway 47 as an alternate route to avoid delays at peak tourist travel times.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will apply permanent pavement markings and remove traffic control.

Portage County

Business Highway 51

Location: Mac Arthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: March 18 to spring 2020

Anticipated work scheduled for next weekCrews will:

  • Work to complete the installation of the remaining driveways on the east side of Business Highway 51 on Highway HH
  • Install temporary asphalt to facilitate traffic pattern changes
  • Work to complete restoration work between Porter Road and Minnesota Avenue on the east side of Business Highway 51
  • Close Highway HH at School Avenue and Lower Whiting Park

Waupaca County

Highway 22 bridges

Location: Wautoma – Clintonville, at bridges over:

(1) South Branch of the Little Wolf River

(2) Crystal River and

(3) Wisconsin Central Ltd. (CN) RR tracks

Schedule: May 14 to Aug. 2, 2019

Traffic impacts: Northbound lane closures on all three bridges. Highway 22 will remain open to traffic in both directions. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and temporary traffic signals.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews are planning on paving the approaches and apply sealer to the new concrete deck overlay on all three bridges. Crews will then switch traffic at all three bridges onto the new bridge deck overlays to implement stage 2 of the project. Crews will then mill off the old surface concrete in the closed portions of the three bridge decks.

Highway 156

Location: Highway 22 to Shawano County Line

Schedule: June 10 to October 2019

Traffic impacts: Highway 156 will remain open to a minimum of one lane of traffic at all times. Temporary traffic signals will be used on the bridge over the Wolf River.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will finish removing the existing paint and finish repainting the girders on the Highway 156 bridge over the Wolf River. Once the girders on the east half of the Highway 156 bridge over the Wolf River are repainted, crews will remove the containment on the east half and move it to the west half of the Highway 156 bridge over the Wolf River.


 Wood County

Highway 97 (Central Avenue)

Location: Between Arnold Street and Harrison Street, city of Marshfield

Schedule: May 1 to Aug. 29

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter one-lane traffic in each direction on Highway 97 between Arnold and Harrison streets. Crews will be working on the inside travel lanes of Highway 97 between Arnold and Harrison streets. Pedestrian access to businesses and schools will be maintained during construction.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will be milling asphalt and removing concrete for base patches at Doege Street, sawing concrete for base patches at Doege Street, placing concrete at the base patches in the Doege Street intersection, and will begin placing binder layer asphalt on the interior lanes from Arnold Street to Harrison Street.

Highway 186

Location: Bridge over Hemlock Creek, village of Vesper

Schedule: June 17 to mid-July 2019

Traffic impacts: The north shoulder will be closed. There will also be some short-term lane closures with flaggers present.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Clean existing concrete areas schedule for repair and form underwater pour areas of east pier.
