WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

One person is dead following a single-vehicle crash Friday near Mosinee, authorities confirmed.

Police have identified the victim as 42-year-old Daniel Smith, of Schofield.

The Wisconsin State Patrol responded at about 3:15 p.m. after a 911 caller reported he had been in a crash on Altenburgh Road, just east of Hwy. 34. The caller, who was the driver of a waste management vehicle, died shortly after calling, police said.

A preliminary investigation shows the driver was traveling on Hwy. 34 and turned east onto Altenburgh road before crossing the center line. Police say the vehicle struck a tree before coming to rest in a ditch on the north side of the road.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
