Dear editor,

I’d like to second Calvin Dexter’s recent letter about gerrymandering. The practice -as currently conducted- works directly against our most precious freedom. That’s the right to vote.

If you hired a painter to paint your house, you wouldn’t allow the painter to determine the color, the quality of the paint, or the days and hours the painting would take place. Yet that’s exactly what’s happened with our political process. Politicians now determine the geographical districts they represent, as well as days and hours of voting, and other voting requirements.

The people should be in charge of the political process, not the politicians.

Michigan citizens worked hard across the state to get the gerrymandering issue on their ballot as a referendum. It passed and citizen-controlled redistricting will take place in 2022.

It’s obvious we cannot rely on the Supreme Court to remedy this situation. State by state -including Wisconsin- citizens will have to mobilize to right this egregious wrong.
