The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for counties in north central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood.

Adams County

Highway 82

Location: Between Juneau County line (Wisconsin River) and Highway 13

Schedule: July 10 to July 31

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations during milling and paving operations.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Milling, paving and shoulder work.


Green Lake and Waushara counties

Highway 49

Location: Highway 23 to South Street (Green Lake to Berlin)

Schedule: May 13 to Oct. 15

Traffic impacts: Shoulders will be closed at various locations in addition to intermittent flagging operations throughout the length of the project. Turn lanes at Highway AA (east and west), Highway V, and the climbing lane at Highway V are closed for reconstruction.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will pave the turn/bypass lanes at Highway AA (east and west), Highway V, Highway A. Crews will conduct prep work for asphalt at Highway V and Highway A.

Langlade County

Highway 64

Location: Fifth Avenue Road to Highway P

Schedule: July 8 to July 30

Traffic impacts: Highway 64 will remain open to through traffic at all times. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during daylight hours with flagging operations. Motorists should be aware that lane shifts will be required at the culvert replacement areas while culvert work is taking place.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews plan to perform restoration, asphalt paving and landscaping work around the new culvert installation approximately 0.5 miles west of Highway P near the east end of the project. Crews also plan to replace an existing culvert across Highway 64 near the west end of the project.


Lincoln County

Highway 64 (Bridge Maintenance)

Location: Bridge over the Prairie River, City of Merrill

Schedule: May 14 to early Aug. 30

Traffic impacts: None

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will be on site to perform crack sealing of pier footing. Rip-rap placement will occur around the piers if water levels remain low.

Highway 86

Location: Between Price County line (Highway YY) and the Wisconsin River Bridge in Tomahawk

Schedule: June 12 to Oct. 17

Traffic impacts: Highway 86 will be closed for two weeks starting on July 16 from Highway O to Highway E for culvert and cable barrier replacements. Local traffic will be allowed as signed. Traffic will be detoured via Highway 13, Highway 8 and Highway 51.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Beam guard and culvert pipe installation.

Highways 17 and 86

Location:

  • Highway 17 over Big Hay Meadow Creek between Merrill and Bloomville
  • Highway 86 over Wisconsin River (Lake Mohawksin) in the City of Tomahawk

Schedule: July 16 to May 2020

Traffic impacts:

  • Traffic on Highway 17 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals over Big Hay Meadow Creek.
  • Traffic on Highway 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals over the Wisconsin River (Lake Mohawksin). Roadway will be reduced to 12 feet in this location.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Staking, traffic control set up, concrete saw cutting, temporary traffic signal installation and asphalt shoulder widening.


Marathon County

Highway WW (Local Project)

Location: Wisconsin River Bridge, Brokaw (Village of Maine)

Schedule: April 22 to May 22, 2020

Traffic impacts: Traffic is currently maintained on a single lane, 10.5 feet in width, on the existing bridge with temporary traffic signals. Traffic will be switched on July 18. Traffic will be maintained on a single lane, 10.5 feet in width, on the new bridge with temporary traffic signals.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Deck stripping, restorative landscaping, concrete pouring for surface drains, asphalt prep work on shoulders and approaches. Placement of base aggregate and installation of guardrails. Temporary concrete barriers, traffic control and pavement markings placed for the traffic switch.

Highway 153

Location: Andrys Lane to Highway J North

Schedule: July 8 to Aug. 1

Traffic impacts: Highway 153 will be open to through traffic at all times for the duration of this project.  The project shall be constructed under traffic with the use of flagging operations.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will construct new curb and gutter at Pioneer Road and Highway 153 intersection.

Highway 29

Location: Highway 29 / Highway 51 Interchange, town of Rib Mountain, Marathon County

Schedule: Construction is scheduled to be completed by July 19. Schedule is based on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.

Traffic impacts:

  • Motorists can expect to encounter one lane of traffic on westbound Highway 29 between Business Highway 51 and Highway N as well as on northbound Highway 51 from Fox Glove Road to Highway N.
  • While working on a portion of the westbound Highway 29 passing lane adjacent to the southbound Highway 51 system ramp.
    • Traffic for southbound Highway 51 will be detoured via northbound Highway 51, Highway N, and southbound Highway 51. This will take place as night work.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Contractor will be back on site the week of July 15 to complete work.

Highway 29

Location: City of Wausau, Marathon County

Schedule: Construction is scheduled to be completed by July 16. Schedule is based on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.

Traffic Impacts: While working on the eastbound Highway 29 to northbound Highway 51 system ramp, the ramp will be closed, and traffic will be detoured along eastbound Highway 52 to northbound Highway 51. A posted detour will be available.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Contractor anticipates closing the eastbound Highway 29 to northbound Highway 51 system ramp on the morning of July 15 to perform repair work to the polymer overlay placed last summer. Work is anticipated to be completed by the afternoon of July 16.


Marquette County

Highway 22

Location: Main and Montello streets, Fifth Street to N. Junction Highway 23

Schedule: April 30 – July 2019

Traffic Impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter periodic flagging operations that will temporarily close a single lane over each of these bridges at times during this work.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Scour mitigation work is planned to continue at the center pier of the Montello River bridge. Crews plan to place rock riprap shielding on top of the grout mat and bag system as a final cover of the scour mitigation repair area.

Highway: 23

Location: City of Montello

Schedule: April 15 to Nov. 15

Traffic impacts: Highway 23 closure from West Street to Park Street ended July 12. Beginning July 12, Highway 23 will be closed from Park Street to Barry Street. Park Street will be closed but Barry Street will remain open. Maps of local detours are posted at the website below.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews grade and seed the north half of the outfall basin, pave driveways from West Street to Lake Street, install permanent signing and temporary pavement marking for West Street to Lake Street, and start sanitary sewer installation on Park Street to Barry Street.

Highways 82 and 23

Location:

  • Highway 82 (Adams/Marquette County line to Fandrich Street and Abbott Street to Interstate-39)
  • Highway 23 (I-39 to Eighth Court)

Schedule: June 18 to Aug. 30

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect single lane closures and flagging operations during construction. A one-day detour of the I-39 northbound on and off ramps will be required to complete the milling and paving operations. No date has been set yet.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Cold-in-place recycled pavement scheduled to begin July 15.


Oneida County

Highways 8 and 47 intersection

Location: City of Rhinelander

Schedule: June 10 to Oct. 18

Traffic impacts: Project currently has Highway 47 northbound and southbound traffic detoured around the intersection. Detour follows Boyce Drive and Kemp Street. Motorists will also encounter flagging operations, shoulder closures and single lane closures. Map of detour can be found here: https://go.usa.gov/xyxEK

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Contractor will continue common excavation, crushed rock placement and base course placement. Curb and gutter layout is tentatively scheduled.

Oneida and Vilas counties

Highway 51

Location: Third Avenue to Tuckaway Drive

Schedule: Spring 2018 to November 2019

Traffic impacts: Highway 51 is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Wallace Road to Highway 70. Traffic on Highway 51 is restricted to a 12-foot maximum width. Motorists should expect to encounter occasional flagging operations. Motorists are encouraged to consider using Highway 47 as an alternate route to avoid delays at peak tourist travel times.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will complete removal of the existing asphalt pavement, complete installation of the new storm sewer and place new gravel base course.

Portage County

Business Highway 51

Location: Mac Arthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: March 18 to spring 2020

Traffic impacts: An updated list of traffic impacts and detour updates for the week of July 15 is available at the website below on the Traffic Impacts & Schedule tab.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week. Crews will:

  • Complete the underground work in the future southbound lanes in the Business Highway 51/Highway HH intersection
  • Begin pouring the new concrete pavement in the future southbound lanes in the Business Highway 51/Highway HH intersection.
  • Begin removing the old pavement from the southbound lanes of Business Highway 51 between Cedar Street and Minnesota Avenue.
  • Resume work on the bridge over McDill Pond.
  • Continue underground work on Tommy’s Turnpike.

Highway 66

Location: At the bridge over the Plover River, between Country Club Drive and Ridge Road.

Schedule: July 15 to late September

Description: Crews will replace the deck on the west bound bridge over the Plover River. To do so, all traffic will be shifted onto the existing east bound lanes with one lane in each direction.

Traffic impacts:

  • Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and a crossover on each side of the bridge with traffic shifted to the eastbound lanes. One lane in each direction on Highway 66 at the bridge will be maintained during construction.
  • A regulatory speed limit reduction will be implemented with the project. The speed limit will be reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph.
  • Motorists can expect a maximum lane width of 11 feet within the project limits.
  • Motorists should expect congestion and delays during peak travel times and are encouraged to find alternate routes.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Left lane closures of eastbound and westbound Highway 66, build crossovers, tentative traffic switch to eastbound lanes on Friday afternoon.


Shawano County

Highway 22

Location: Between Highway B and Zingler Street and Main Street and Highway BE

Schedule: July 15 to Nov. 1

Traffic impacts: Motorists should expect single lane closures and 10’ lane widths on Highway 22 between Highway HHH/Airport Road and Highway BE. Rusch Road and Madison Way will be closed at Highway 22 the weeks of July 15 and July 22 due to the configuration of Highway 22 traffic and construction safety. Single lane closures on Highway 22 between Main Street and Highway HHH will begin on July 22. In August, Highway 22 will be closed for three weeks to complete the railroad crossing, a signed detour route will be installed.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Begin work on temporary diversion culverts at the Murray Creek Box Culvert and project survey. Clearing and grubbing of trees at Murray Creek. Installation of erosion control.

Note: A new railroad crossing on East Fifth Street (part of a local project schedule for completion on July 31) is to be completed in conjunction with this Highway 22 project. Fifth Street will remain closed to through traffic, access to residents will be maintained throughout construction. A signed pedestrian detour route is in place, Fifth Street pedestrians will utilize Hamlin Street to Green Bay Street to Fairview Avenue to navigate around the construction project.


Waupaca and Wood counties

(Regionwide Culvert Replacement)

Highway 110

Location: Between Wolf River Drive and Highway 96 in Fremont

Schedule: July 8 to Nov. 1

Traffic impacts: Highway 110 – Wolf River Bridge: Motorists can expect to encounter one lane crossing the bridge with temporary signals from July 8 through mid-October with a maximum 14-foot width restriction.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will start deck preparation of the northbound lanes on the bridge.


Waupaca County

Highway 22 bridges

Location: Wautoma – Clintonville, at bridges over:

(1) South Branch of the Little Wolf River

(2) Crystal River and

(3) Wisconsin Central Ltd. (CN) RR tracks

Schedule: May 14 to Aug. 2

Traffic impacts: Southbound lane closures on all three bridges. Highway 22 will remain open to traffic in both directions. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and temporary traffic signals.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will pour concrete for portions of the bridge deck overlays on all three bridges. They will also pour the sections of the north concrete parapet wall at bridge (3) that were removed for the expansion joint replacements at the east and west ends of the bridge. They will also continue performing concrete surface repairs on the three bridges.

Highway 156

Location: Highway 22 to Shawano County Line

Schedule: June 10 to October

Traffic impacts: Highway 156 will remain open to a minimum of one lane of traffic at all times.  Temporary traffic signals will be used on the bridge over the Wolf River.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will continue removing the existing paint and continue repainting the west half of the Highway 156 bridge over the Wolf River. Crews will grade and install surface drains by the Highway 156 bridge over the Embarrass River.


Wood County

Highway 54

Location: City of Wisconsin Rapids, Secpnd Avenue South

Schedule: July 8 to Aug. 26

Traffic impacts: Traffic restricted to one lane in each direction between the roundabout and Highway 13 (Riverview Expressway).

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will begin removal of asphalt and curb on the east side (or park side) to start grading for road widening.

Highway 97 (Central Avenue)

Location: Between Arnold Street and Harrison Street, City of Marshfield

Schedule: May 1 to Aug. 29

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter one-lane traffic in each direction on Highway 97 between Arnold and Harrison Streets. Crews will be working on the inside travel lanes of Highway 97 between Arnold and Harrison Streets. Pedestrian access to businesses and schools will be maintained during construction.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Surface asphalt placement on interior lanes from Arnold Street to Harrison Street. Traffic control and temporary pavement markings will be set up for the traffic switch scheduled for July 18.

Project: Region Wide Bridge Polymer Overlays (NEW)

Highway/Location: 

  • Lincoln County: Highway 17
  • Marathon County: Highway 153 and Highway 52
  • Shawano County: Highway 22, Highway 47 and Highway 156

Schedule: July 15 through Aug. 21

Traffic impacts: Each structure throughout the project will have temporary signals, stop signs or flaggers. None of the structures throughout the project will be completely closed to traffic. Traffic will experience minor delays.
