WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

Once facing child neglect charges, the father of a child who died at a Rhinelander-area home will spend two weeks in jail on reduced charges of obstructing an officer,

Trung Tran was sentenced Friday in Oneida County Circuit Court in connection with the death of his 20-month-old son, Avery Edwards. Avery died in 2017.

An autopsy showed the 20-month-old boy died of blunt force trauma to the head on April 14, 2017. Tran’s wife, Ellen Tran, 28, was watching the boy, and told police Avery fell in the shower. But doctors treating Edwards thought it looked more like a child abuse case.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office initially recommended charges of intentionally neglecting a child and physical abuse/failure to prevent bodily harm to a child against Trung Tran. But those charges were amended, and Ellen Tran was ultimately convicted in October of reckless homicide in the boy’s death.

Ellen Tran is serving a 15-year sentence for reckless homicide. The couple has since divorced.
