UPDATE: A sex offender who cut off his electric ankle monitor and left his traditional housing unit near the Marathon County Courthouse is back in custody as of early Wednesday morning, according to a Wausau Police Department Facebook post.

An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for James M. Begay, 30. Police issued a public plea for information Tuesday, after Begay disappeared near downtown Wausau.

His last known address was at 617 Jefferson St., Wausau.

Begay served time for a 2012 sexual assault and reached his mandatory prison release date on Jan. 2019.WANTED_JAMES_BEGAY
