GREEN BAY, Wis. — In the first of a two-game series, the Wisconsin Woodchucks lost a tight matchup with the Green Bay Booyah on Saturday by a final score of 2-1.
The Woodchucks are now 27-32 on the season, fifth in the Northwoods League Great Lakes West overall standings.
Both pitchers started off well, with Green Bay starter Garrett Martin and Woodchucks starter Beau Nichols getting through the first three innings without allowing a run and picking up a couple of strikeouts each.
The scoreless tie ended in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Nichols struck out the first two batters in the inning, he gave up a walk to Nick Kruetzer, and Jacob Buchberger did the rest. He hit a two-run home run to give the Booyah a 2-0 lead going into the fifth.
The Woodchucks put a few base runners on in the next few innings, but couldn’t manage to score a run.
The Woodchucks finally got on the board in the top ot the seventh. Cam Swanger led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and then Alec Arnone walked. Santino Miozzi grounded into a double play, allowing Swanger to advance to third base. Lawrence Cicileo did the rest, singling into right field and cutting the Booyah lead in half at 2-1.
That would be the last run scored. The Woodchucks threatened in the ninth inning, putting the tying run on third base, but left the runner stranded.

Beau Nichols pitched eight spectacular innings, striking out seven batters and giving up just two runs.
Kyle Simmons went two for three with a couple of big base hits.
Lawrence Cicileo added a hit and an RBI.

The Wisconsin Woodchucks will complete their two-game series against the Green Bay Booyah on Sunday, July 28. The game will begin at 3:05 p.m. at Athletic Park in Wausau.
