MINOCQUA – Lakeland Union High School alum Michele Good will co-star in Wisconsin Public Radio’s Old Time Radio Drama Live performance of “There’s Always a Woman,” Aug. 23 at the Campanile Center for the Arts in Minocqua.
“There’s Always a Woman” weaves a clever noir narrative complete with a mysterious wealthy client, blackmail and other nefarious goings on.
This is a homecoming for Good, who not only grew up in the Lakeland area, but was the Campanile’s first artistic director.
“I’m super excited to perform again on the Campanile stage, and I hope to see many old friends come out with their families,” Good said in a news release.
Good and Norman Gilliland, host of WPR’s long-running weekend show “Old Time Radio Drama,” updated “There’s Always A Woman” from a 1939 Campbell’s Playhouse radio drama. The show includes dramatizations of reworked Campbell’s Soup commercials and a mini-episode of “Fibber McGee & Molly.”
“People love Old Time Radio Drama even if they’ve never heard the originals,” Gilliland said in the release. “It’s a unique form of drama.”
Gilliland and Good had fun playing with the gender stereotypes in their updated version. In the original, Bill Reardon gives up on his detective agency and his spouse, Sally, takes a case on her own, to the dismay of all the men around her.
“Sally is a clever woman who plays dumb when she needs to,” Good said. “The character of the husband, originally played by Orson Welles, has been given some tweaks, too. He’s sort of bewildered and charmed by his wife’s abilities.”
