WAUSAU — Monk Botanical Gardens is among nine specialty public gardens around the country in a national competition for prize money.

The garden that earns the most online votes will receive $1,000 in signage from the event sponsor, Lark Label Co. of Wichita, Kansas.

Twenty-one acres of the gardens at 1800 N. First Avenue were donated to the organization by Robert Monk in 2003. Since then, the gardens has acquired nine more acres and has been working to develop it all.

“One of the struggles we have had is getting our plants categorized and labelled. This funding would aid in our efforts currently lead by a strong group of volunteers,” said Executive Director Darcie Howard in a news release.

People can vote once per day at larklabel.com/loves-garden-choices/. The contest began Aug. 1 and ends on Aug. 31. Supporters can vote once a day.
