AMHERST – Tomorrow River School District in Amherst and Ascension Saint Michael’s Hospital Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners program have partnered to present a program on dating, communication, respect and sexual assault awareness.
Safer Choices will be held on Aug. 29 and is targeted for youths and their parents in grades 7-12. This program is open to anyone in the area and is free. It will be held in the Amherst School Cafeteria at 3 p.m., doors will open at 2:30 p.m.
“Parents, educators, and community members throughout the country and from all walks of life (cultural, faith, socio-economic) have praised this educational program for creating meaningful change in students’ ability to make better, safer choices in their lives and in the lives of their peers,” said Jenny Blenker, RN, SANE program manager at Ascension St. Michael’s Hospital, in a news release.
Safer Choices features Mike Domitrz, founder of The Center for Respect, and the Safer Choices program. It aims to teach consent and respect in relationships. It will cover topics like distinguishing healthy emotional and physical boundaries for relationships, understanding the importance of consent, determining the right age to date and who is right to date, supporting survivors of sexual assault and building a healthier school culture.
“This presentation is a fun, thought-provoking look at dating and intimacy in high school and/or middle school,” Blenker said.
