Football Roundup: East notches win over Merrill; Everest falls

Merrill– The Wausau East Lumberjacks pulled out a nice victory in their first game of the season, downing Merrill 23-6.

East rushed for over 300 yards as a team.

Donovan Leverette shouldered the load in the ground game.  Leverette rushed for over 200 yards and scored three touchdowns.

East’s 23 points on Friday night were more than they scored in any single game last season and they are already halfway to their win total in 2018.

The Lumberjacks stand at 1-0 this season; they finished with a 2-7 record last year.

East will head home next week where they will host Southern Door.  Southern Door took one on the chin in their first game of the season against Winneconne, losing 32-3.

D.C. Everest 14, Appleton East 21

The Evergreens were knotted with Appleton East 7-7 at halftime, but the Patriots scored twice in the second half to pick up the win.

Everest, now 0-1 on the season, will look to right the ship next week as they host Oshkosh West.

Newman 53,  Oakfield 21

Newman lit up the scoreboard against Oakfield in their 8-man season opener at Stiehm Stadium to improve to 1-0 on the season.

The Cardinals will look to keep things rolling in Week 2 as they will square off against McDonell Central.  McDonell Central defeated Port Edwards 42-40 in their season opener on Friday night.
