Jury selection was held Wednesday in the trial of a A 65-year-old Tomahawk man accused of sexually assaulting a student at Northwoods Community Elementary School in Cassian, near Rhinelander. The trial is now entering its second day.
An investigation began in November when the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department School Resource Officer received a call from the school reporting a possible sexual assault of a student by an independently contracted employee working at the school. Upon investigation, detectives arrested Stavros Iliopoulos on charges of first degree sexual assault of a child, false imprisonment and child enticement.
Iliopoulos was an employee of Victory Janitorial, Inc., worked at the school and was known by students as “Mr. Steve” at the time of the alleged attack, according to police. He faces felony charges of child enticement, false imprisonment and sexual assault of a child.
According to a WJFW report, testimony Wednesday included statements from the school’s principal who described the girl as scared and shaken after the alleged assault.
but Iliopoulos‘ attorney, Andrew Morgan, said the girl’s story and details changed repeatedly after initially reporting the allegations against his client.
Testimony is expected to resume Thursday. Iliopoulos remains jailed on a $50,000 cash bond.
