Police in Stevens Point evacuated several homes after a 41-year-old Stevens Point man threatened to blow up his home Saturday evening.

At about 5:15 p.m., police responded to the 600 block of Washington Avenue, where a neighbor reported the man’s threats. Police say they have had previous interactions with the man, who planned to use natural gas and an open flame to initiate the explosion.

Homes within a one-block radius were evacuated until the suspect was detained. He was taken to a medical facility for mental health screening.

Nearby residents were allowed back into their homes by about 6 p.m. No criminal charges have yet been filed in the case and the name of the suspect has not been released.

The Stevens Point Fire Department and Wisconsin Public Service also responded to the scene.
