Prep roundup: West rolls in tennis and volleyball; Wausau’s Yang earns medalist honors in WVC golf leg

MERRILL – Natasha Bailey set the tone at No. 1 singles and the rest of the Wausau West girls tennis team followed suit in a 7-0 shutout win over Merrill in a Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet Tuesday.

Bailey posted a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory in her match with the Bluejays’ Amelia Skoviera.

Molly Schaefer duplicated that result at No. 4 singles for West, while Lilia Teske only dropped two games in her straight set victory at No. 2 singles.

The Warriors won all three doubles matches in straight sets led by the No. 1 tandem of Katie Meyer and Mallory Names, who combined to cruise to an impressive  6-1, 6-1 win.

Singles: No. 1 – Natasha Bailey (WW) def. Amelia Skoviera, 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 – Lilia Teske (WW) def. Alexandra Johnson, 6-2, 6-0; No. 3 – Sophia Kohl (WW) def. Kamille Ament, 6-4, 7-6; No. 4 – Molly Schaefer (WW) def. Ashlynn Semling 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles: No. 1 – Katie Meyer/Mallory Names (WW) def. Anna Rydeski/Erin Murray, 6-1, 6-1; No. 2 – Madeleine Bizjak/Mia Hoehn (WW) def. Autumn Reissmann/Audrey Ladewig, 7-5, 6-4; No. 3 – Brenna Holtz/Ruby Edmundson (WW) def. Katelyn Hahn/Angela Hinner, 6-3, 6-0.

Girls tennis

Antigo 5, Newman Catholic 2

WAUSAU – as the Cardinals split their four singles matches with the Red Robins.

The news wasn’t quite as good on the doubles side where Antigo swept all three matches.

Newman Catholic’s top doubles team of Desirae Lo and Julia Welter put up a strong fight, but dropped a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 decision to the Red Robins tandem of Jenna Lenzner and Greta Parsons.

Doubles: No. 1 – Jenna Lenzner/Greta Parsons (A) def. Desirae Lo/Julia Welter, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; No. 2 – Lily Nicholson/Julia Westen (A) def. Elizabeth Clancy/Natalie Townsend, 6-1, 6-0; No. 3 – Elli Stank/Ellie Preboski (A) def. Gabby Hackett/Destiny Lo, 6-0, 6-3.

Volleyball

Wausau West 3, Mosinee 0

MOSINEE – Juniors Robyn Kirsch collected 11 kills and Grace Michalske handed out 23 assists to pace the Warriors to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-11 sweep over the Indians in a nonconference matchup.

West also turned in a strong defensive performance led by Jenna Rusch who was credited with 18 digs. Kirsch and Kiley Deaton chipped in with 15 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Warriors return to Wisconsin Valley Conference action when they visit SPASH on Thursday night.

Girls golf

WVC Leg No. 3

STEVENS POINT – Bolstered by the dynamic 1-2 punch of medalist Yasmine Yang and Tess Bruner, who shot 39 and 43, respectively, Wausau placed a close second in the team standings at the third leg of the Valley meet at Stevens Point Country Club.

Yang earned medalist honors, but Stevens Point Area Senior High grabbed the team accolades with a score of 182. Wausau was right behind at 184.

“Tonight was an exciting night for us. We came in second by only two strokes (behind SPASH),” Wausau coach Lisa Peck said. “The closest margin yet for us.”

Wausau’s Jess Nardi helped the cause with a round of 49 to tie for seventh overall.
