A Wausau East high school student is hospitalized and a 20-year-old man is facing attempted homicide charges after a shooting Wednesday near downtown Wausau, multiple sources have confirmed.
Police responded at 6:40 p.m. Sept. 11 to Langsdorf Street between North Third Street and North Fifth Street for a report of possible gunshots and found several empty shell casings, according to a news release issued just before midnight by the Wausau Police Department. Langsdorf Street is a short east-west road one block south of Short Street and one block on the Third Street side and one block north of Fulton Street on the Fifth Street side.
About 15 minutes later police were notified that a 16-year-old boy was at a local emergency room for treatment of a gunshot wound, the release stated.
Through the course of the investigation police identified and arrested a suspect, 20-year-old Kaiden F. Bemowski, who is jailed on a preliminary charge of attempted homicide. Official charges could be filed as early as Thursday.
Police describe the shooting as an isolated incident stemming from a drug-related confrontation. The victim in the shooting is expected to survive.
The shooting is the second in a two-day span on Wausau’s east side involving juveniles. On Sept. 9, police responded to the 900 block of Washington Street for a report of shots fired, though no injuries were reported in the incident. Two juveniles, including a 14-year-old boy, were taken into custody in connection with Monday’s shooting.
