PLOVER – Wausau West’s Ryan Hartman led the boys field across the finish line at the SPASH Invitational on Saturday. He covered the 5,000-meter course at Standing
Rocks Park in a time of 15 minutes, 52 seconds.

West finished third in the team standings with 136 points behind champion SPASH and Marshfield. D.C. Everest placed fourth at 145.

The Evergreens’ were led by Zach Brandenburg who grabbed a ninth-place result in a time of 17:09. Jacob Olson had the best showing for Wausau East, placing 37th in 18:21.

East’s Mckenna Taylor turned in the best individual performance from the area on the girls side with a seventh-place showing in 20:36. Alex Galang was the top runner for West with a time of 21:23 to place 18th.

West and East finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with 168 and 173 points. D.C. Everest took 12th with a 320 total.

SPASH’s Roisin Willis crusised to the girls title in a time of 18:54 to win by more than a minute.

Shawano Invitational

SHAWANO – Robyn Kirsch contributed 32 kills and Anna Cunningham chipped in with 20 kills to help lead Wausau West to a second-place showing in tournament action Saturday.

The Warriors (14-3) concluded the day with a 4-1 record after picking up wins over Shawano (20-25, 25-12, 15-13), Kewaunee (25-18, 25-17), Oconto Falls (25-21, 25-22) and Brillion (25-17, 25-17).

The lone loss came at the hands of Oconto 25-16, 25-18.

Joining Kirsch and Cunningham with double-digit kills were Maddie Hauer with 15 kills and Cassandra Oelke had 14. Kiley Deaton and Grace Michalske helped out with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

Michalske enjoyed a strong all-around performance for the Warriors. She accounted for 85 of the team’s 98 assists and contributed 23 digs.

Jenna Rusch and Kirsch led the defense with 34 digs apiece. Oelke totalled 22 digs and Deaton finished with 20 digs.

Football

Late Friday

Newman Catholic 49, White Lake/Elcho 0

WHITE LAKE – The second-ranked Cardinals were without all-state quarterback Ben Bates who was sidelined with an injury.

No problem. Dylan Ackermann was more than ready to fill Bates’ cleats with a helping hand from a smothering defense.

All Ackermann did was complete 12 of 14 passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns as New Catholic romped to another easy victory to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Joe Stephan grabbed five receptions for 71 yards and a pair of scores, while Charlie McCarty caught four passes for 56 yards and a TD.

Thomas Bates paced the Cardinals’ ground attack with 151 yards on just 12 carries with a touchdown.

Newman Catholic outgained White Lake/Elcho 441 yards to minus-67.

The Cardinals will host Saint Mary Catholic in a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday at Stiehm Stadium.

Wausau West 5, Wisconsin Rapids 2

WAUSAU – The Warriors took care of business in singles by sweeping all four matches to claim the WVC dual meet in a match postponed from Sept. 5 by inclement weather.

West picked up straight set wins in all of the singles matches, including 6-0, 6-0 shutout wins for Lilia Teske and Sophia Kohl at the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.
