New details have been released in the Sept. 13 officer involved shooting in Loyal, which is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.
According to a DOJ release, Loyal police officers along with deputies from Clark County, Marathon County and Eau Claire County were engaged in a standoff with a suspect following a traffic stop and pursuit. The suspect has been identified as 77-year-old Robert E. Domine, of Loyal.
During the standoff, which took place at Domine’s home, officers deployed gas into the residence but the standoff continued. That’s when Domine allegedly fired on officers, striking Clark County Sheriff’s Sergeant Wade Hebert, who received non-life threatening injuries.
Domine was struck in the exchange of gunfire and died of his injuries at the scene, the release stated.
The shooting officer, Marathon County Sheriff’s Deputy Russell Gage, has been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy. Deputy Gage has been in law enforcement since 1995.
DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol, Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office, and Loyal Police Department.
DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
