A 25-year-old registered sex offender from Birnamwood will be released next month Wausau and will be placed on supervision at a transitional living facility, according to police.

Matthew West-Waldner was convicted in 2015 in Marathon County Circuit Court of second degree sexual assault of a child and, in a separate Langlade County case, exposing a child to harmful materials. He will be released on Oct. 1, his mandatory release date, but will remain on supervision until 2025.

Court records show West-Waldner was convicted of additional, but unrelated, drug charges in 2017.

West-Waldner will be monitored by sex offender agent specialists and will be subject to GPS monitoring. He will be living in transitional housing near the Marathon County Courthouse and will be on a highly restricted schedule with time out in the community for work and treatment, police said. Current state law requires sex offenders to be released into the county in which they were convicted.

His ongoing status will be updated and available online through the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry at www.widocoffenders.org.
