WAUSAU — The Wausau East High School East End Players will take you on a raucous trip down memory lane when they present “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” in mid October.

The 1960s hit comedy TV show combined social commentary with incredible wit, drawing in regular viewers and influencing lexicon in the mainstream.

Sayings, such as “Sock it to me,” were not only uttered by business executives, secretaries, housewives and everyday working people, they were spoken freely by media and political types wishing to be thought of as in touch with the “hipper” younger generation. “Laugh-In” spared no one in its sarcasm and very often stepped dangerously close to the edge with network execs. Once the show caught fire with TV viewers, it became the norm for actors, actresses and politicians to lobby for a position on the next week’s show.
