The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for counties in North Central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood.

Green Lake County

Highway: WIS 49

Location: WIS 23 to South street (Green Lake to Berlin)

Schedule: May 13, 2019 to October 15, 2019

Traffic impacts: Traffic may be stopped for intermittent flagging operations throughout the project.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Shouldering crews will finish placing material by the end of the week. Pavement marking crews will be preparing and placing pavement markings throughout the project all week. Centerline rumble strips are scheduled to be completed as well.

Lincoln County

Highway:  WIS 86

Location: Between Price County line (County YY) and the Wisconsin River Bridge in Tomahawk

Schedule: June 12, 2019 to October 17, 2019

Traffic impacts: Traffic on WIS 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of flaggers during asphalt paving and shouldering operations.  All traffic lanes will be opened at the end of each work day. Traffic of WIS 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals during construction of concrete bridge deck overlays over the North Fork Spirit River and Squaw Creek.  Roadway will be reduced to 11 feet wide in these locations.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Installation of gravel shoulders, asphalt paving, bridge deck repairs and bridge deck overlays.

Highway:  WIS 17 and WIS 86

Location: WIS 17 over Big Hay Meadow Creek between Merrill & Bloomville and WIS 86 over Wisconsin River (Lake Mohawksin), City of Tomahawk

Schedule: July 16, 2019 to May 2020

Traffic impacts: Traffic on WIS 17 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals over Big Hay Meadow Creek. Traffic on WIS 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals over the Wisconsin River (Lake Mohawksin). Roadway will be reduced to 12-feet wide in this location.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Bridge deck overlays on WIS 17 and WIS 86.


Marathon County

Highway:  County WW (Local Project)

Location: Wisconsin River Bridge, Brokaw (Village of Maine)

Schedule: April 22, 2019 to May 22, 2020

Traffic impacts: Traffic is currently maintained on a single lane, 10.5 feet in width, on the existing bridge with temporary traffic signals. The bridge will be reopened to two lanes on October 3.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will complete punch list items. The polymer overlay will be installed in the spring of 2020.


Marquette County

Highway:  WIS 23

Location: City of Montello

Schedule: April 15th, 2019 to November 15th, 2019

Traffic impacts: WIS 23 is closed from Barry Street to Ellis Street. Both intersections at Ellis Street and Barry Street will remain open. Traffic from Morningside Court to Elis Street has been moved to the temporary widening. There is one lane in each direction. Lane widths have been reduced to 11 feet with a two-foot paved shoulder.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:

  • Complete topsoil, seed, fertilizer for Stage 3 (Lake Ave to Barry Street)
  • Complete topsoil, seed, fertilizer for Stage 4 (Barry Street to Ellis Street)
  • Complete sidewalk for Stage 4 (Barry Street to Ellis Street)
  • Complete driveways for Stage 4 (Barry Street to Ellis Street)
  • Complete topsoil areas behind curb and gutter for Stage 4 (Barry Street to Ellis Street)
  • Install light poles for stage 3 (Lake Ave to Barry Street)

Highway:  WIS 22

Location: Main and Montello Streets, 5th Street to North Junction WIS 23

Schedule: October 7, 2019 to November 14, 2019

Description: Crews will remove beam guard and replace with a concrete barrier wall. Crews will also remove and replace sidewalk, curb and gutter and a portion of WIS 22 southbound within the project limits.

Traffic impacts: The southbound lane of WIS 22 will be closed approximately 0.25 miles south of the WIS 22 / 23 intersection.  Motorists can expect relatively short delays as temporary traffic signals will be used to control traffic through the work zone.  Access to adjacent properties will be maintained.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Subject to favorable weather conditions, crews will set up traffic control and lane closure. Crews will sawcut and remove asphalt.

Highway: WIS 82 and WIS 23

Location: WIS 82 (Adams/Marquette County line to Fandrich Street AND Abbott Street to I-39), WIS 23 (I-39 to 8th Court)

Schedule: June 18, 2019 to August 30, 2019 (Additional time will be added to complete additional work) Additional work is scheduled to be completed by/on October 18, 2019.

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect single lane closures and flagging operations during construction.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: On Wednesday, October 9, crews will complete the roadway patch over the culvert lined the previous week (west of the WIS 82 and 4th Drive intersection). Following the roadway patch, crews will remain on site to complete punch list items and additional work at the culvert end walls and southwest corner of the railroad crossing


Oneida County

Highway: US 8 and WIS 47 intersection

Location: City of Rhinelander

Schedule: June 10, 2019 to October 18, 2019

Traffic impacts: All four legs of the roundabout are open, and detours have been removed. Motorists will still encounter flagging operations, shoulder closures, and single lane closures.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will install sign bridges over US 8 and Kemp Street and remaining light poles in the intersection. Contractor will work on punch list items.

Oneida and Vilas counties

Highway:  US 51

Location: 3rd Avenue to Tuckaway Drive

Schedule: Spring 2018 to November 2019

Traffic impacts:  US 51 is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Wallace Road to WIS 70. In addition, US 51 will have occasional lane closures throughout the project and WIS 47 will have occasional parking or turning lane closures, so crews can complete punch list work. Traffic on US 51 is restricted to a 12-foot maximum width. Motorists should expect to encounter occasional flagging operations. Motorists are encouraged to consider using WIS 47 as an alternate route to avoid delays at peak tourist travel times.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will complete pouring new sidewalk, restore driveways and parking lots, place new asphalt pavement, finish topsoil, seed and place erosion mat. Crews will then install the remaining permanent signs.

Highway: Business 51

Location: Mac Arthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: March 18, 2019 to Spring 2020

Traffic impacts:

  • Access to the McDill boat landing will be closed off Business 51 beginning October 7 at 5 p.m. The boat landing will be re-opened once the concrete pavement has gained sufficient strength; anticipated date of October 15 at 7 a.m.
  • The intersection of Cedar Street west with Business 51 will be closed beginning Friday, October 4.  Cedar Street will be closed for approximately two weeks while crews complete all concrete paving in the intersection. The intersection of Willow Street west and Business 51 will remain open.
  • Pedestrian traffic can resume utilizing the sidewalk on the east side of Business 51 and the south side of County HH.
  • Tommy’s Turnpike at Business 51 remains closed.
  • Traffic on Business 51 has been reduced to one lane in each direction between MacArthur Way and Minnesota Avenue.  All traffic on Business 51 has been shifted to the newly constructed northbound lanes.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:

  • Crews will complete the remaining mainline concrete paving operations for the project.
  • Crews will continue installing the new sidewalk along Tommy’s Turnpike and on County HH.
  • Crews will continue to install street light and signal light components in the Tommy’s Turnpike intersection.
  • Crews will install the railing on the bridge over McDill Pond.

Shawano County

Highway: WIS 22

Location: Between County B and Zingler Street & Main Street and County BE

Schedule: July 15, 2019 to November 1, 2019

Traffic impacts: Single lane closures and 10-foot lane widths on WIS 22 between County HHH/Airport Road and County BE will continue through October. Single lane closures on WIS 22/Green Bay Street between Fairview Avenue and Airport Road will occur this week for gravel shoulder operations pending weather.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Work continues on the Murray Creek Box Culvert.

Vilas County

Highway: US 45

Location: WIS 70 East to WIS 70 West/ WIS 17 North

Schedule: August 12, 2019 to October 8, 2019

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter one lane traffic in both eastbound and westbound lanes on US 45/Pine Street between WIS 70 east and WIS 70 west intersections. Motorists should expect travel delays.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Pavement marking crews plan to complete their work on Friday, October 4. Other crews plan to continue installing new sidewalk and ADA compliant ramps with restoration work and new signing following right behind.

Waupaca and Wood counties

Highway: WIS 110

Location: Between Wolf River Drive and WIS 96 in Fremont

Schedule: July 8, 2019 to November 22, 2019

Traffic impacts at WIS 110, Wolf River Bridge: Motorists can expect to encounter one lane crossing the bridge with temporary signals from July 8 thru November 22.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Bridge deck preparation will continue on the southbound lanes of the bridge. Crews will also start on joint repairs mid-week.


Waupaca County

Highway: US 10

Location: US 10 in Waupaca, between WIS 22 interchange through the Churchill Street interchange.

Schedule: August 26, 2019 through October 11, 2019

Traffic impacts:

  • Fall 2019: US 10 will remain open to a minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction during construction. The Churchill Street on-ramp to US 10 westbound will be closed for the remainder of Fall 2019 construction.
  • 2020 Construction: US 10 will remain open to a minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction with eastbound and westbound traffic using the westbound lanes. County E, under US 10, will be closed for approximately five months (April thru mid-August 2020).

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will finish erosion control and the project will be complete for the 2019 construction year.

Highway: WIS 156

Location: WIS 22 to Shawano County Line

Schedule: June 10, 2019 to October 2019

Traffic impacts:  WIS 156 will remain open to a minimum of one lane of traffic at all times.

Highway: WIS 49

Location: Anderson Road to Peterson Road, village of Iola.

Schedule: October 3, 2019 to October 23, 2019

Traffic impacts:  There will be a shoulder closure on WIS 49 northbound near the County MM intersection from Thursday, October 3rd through Friday October 11. This should not impact the traveling public. Following shoulder closure, crews will begin milling and paving operations. This will reduce traffic to one lane, 12 feet in width, under a flagging operation during working hours. After working hours, the road will be opened to a two-lane configuration with full travel widths.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will begin removing and replacing 100 feet of concrete curb and gutter on October 7 near the intersection with County MM. After the removal, minor work including surface patching will be performed while concrete is curing. Pending work and weather, crews anticipate milling operations to begin on October 10 or October 11.
