Two candidates, including a former Wausau mayor, have submitted letters of intent to fill a vacant Wausau City Council position, according to Clerk Toni Rayala.
As of Oct. 15 Jennifer Gabriel and Linda Lawrence have come forward as possible candidates to represent Dist. 8, a seat left vacant after longtime city council member Karen Kellbach stepped down from her role to move to Oklahoma to be closer to her son. She died days later.
Lawrence, Wausau’s first and only female mayor to date, won a special election in April 1998 to replace former Mayor John Hess. She was re-elected to a full term in 2000.
Dist. 8 is a section of Wausau’s west side that includes areas west of north First Avenue including West Bridge Street with a northern border of Randolph Street and a southern border of Spruce Street. Visit the city’s online map for greater detail.
Interested residents living in Dist. 8 have until Friday, Oct. 18 to apply. Materials are available at the city clerk’s office at City Hall, 407 Grant St., Wausau, and can be downloaded online here.
Applicants will be interviewed at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 22 by members of the city council and the successful applicant will be sworn into office that evening.
The representative selected will serve from Oct. 22, 2019 to April 2020, when spring elections are held.
