MINOCQUA– Lakeland came into their tilt against Wausau East with a 5-3 record and looked to extend their winning streak to three games in the regular season finale on Friday night.
The Thunderbirds did just that, riding a second half rally to a 34-26 victory.
Wausau East put pressure on Lakeland in the first half as they took a 20-14 lead at halftime. East found the end zone on the final play of the first half when Matt Heinrich hooked up with Sam Moses for a 42-yard touchdown.
Unfortunately for the Lumberjacks, momentum in the second half tilted in Lakeland’s favor as the Thunderbirds broke through for 20 points subsequent to intermission.
Donovan Leverette rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Lumberjacks. Heinrich finished the night with two touchdowns, including a scamper from one yard out.
Michael Ouimette had four touchdown passes for Lakeland.
The Lumberjacks conclude the regular season with a 3-6 overall record.
Wisconsin Rapids 40, Wausau West 24
WAUSAU– The Wausau West Warriors fell behind early to Rapids and, despite a second half rally, couldn’t claw their way back into the game as they lost 40-24 at Thom Field in Wausau.
It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Warriors, who finish the regular season with a 1-8 record.
Rapids wasted no time getting to work on offense, rolling up 33 points by halftime.
West tallied all 24 of their points in the second half.
Rapids concludes the season with a 4-5 overall record.
Newman 52, Belmont 20
BELMONT– The hits just keep on coming for the Newman Cardinals.
In the regular season finale, Newman put up another impressive performance on offense, rolling up 52 points, in a blowout win over Belmont.
Newman piled up 600 yards of offense.
But it wasn’t just the offense that was clicking for Newman. For the second straight week, Newman held a 1,000 yard rusher to under 50 yards on the ground. The Cardinals held Belmont to 242 total yards
Thomas Bates had 25 carries for 270 yards and two touchdowns.
Ben Bates was 17-24 passing for 288 yards and three touchdowns. Bates added one rushing touchdown as well.
Joe Stephan got in on the action for Newman with eight receptions for 168 yards and a touchdown, while Charlie McCarty had seven catches for 60 yards.
Newman finishes the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record and looks to keep the momentum moving forward as playoffs begin next week.
