The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for counties in North Central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood.

Lincoln County

Highway:  WIS 86

Location: Between Price County line (County YY) and the Wisconsin River Bridge in Tomahawk

Schedule: June 12, 2019 to October 2019

Traffic impacts: Traffic on WIS 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of flaggers during asphalt paving and shouldering operations.  All traffic lanes will be opened at the end of each work day. Traffic on WIS 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals during construction of concrete bridge deck overlays over the North Fork Spirit River and Squaw Creek.  Roadway will be reduced to 11 feet wide in these locations.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Beam guard installation and asphalt paving.

Highway:  WIS 17 and WIS 86

Location: WIS 17 over Big Hay Meadow Creek between Merrill & Bloomville and WIS 86 over Wisconsin River (Lake Mohawksin), city of Tomahawk

Schedule: July 16, 2019 to May 2020

Traffic impacts: Traffic on WIS 17 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals over Big Hay Meadow Creek. Traffic on WIS 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of temporary traffic signals over the Wisconsin River (Lake Mohawksin). Roadway will be reduced to 12-feet wide in this location.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will remove temporary barrier and install beam guards. Crews will also be in the area paving.


Marquette County

Highway:  WIS 23

Location: City of Montello, Underwood Avenues; Park Street to West Street & Morningside Court to Park Street

Schedule: April 15th, 2019 to November 15th, 2019

Traffic impacts: WIS 23 was opened to local traffic at 3 p.m., October 16, 2019. The detour is still in place for non-local traffic. Temporary signals were setup just east of Morningside Court and just west of Stevens Avenue. This section of road will be alternating one-way traffic. The lane width has been reduced to 11’ with a 2’ paved shoulder. WIS 23 from Stevens Avenue to West Street will be open to the public with occasional flagging operations expected.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:

  • Complete seed, fertilizer, and mulch for stage three (Lake Avenue to Barry Street)
  • Complete seed, fertilizer, and mulch for stage four (Barry Street to Ellis Street)
  • Remove existing asphalt for stage five (Ellis Street to Morningside Court)
  • Install temporary water services for stage five (Ellis Street to Morningside Court)
  • Install water main for stage five (Ellis Street to Morningside Court)

Highway:  WIS 22

Location: Main and Montello Streets, 5th Street to North Junction WIS 23

Schedule: October 7, 2019 to November 14, 2019

Traffic impacts: The southbound lane of WIS 22 will be closed approximately 0.25 miles south of the WIS 22 / 23 intersection.  Motorists can expect relatively short delays as temporary traffic signals will be used to control traffic through the work zone.  Access to adjacent properties will be maintained.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Subject to favorable weather conditions, crews will remove asphalt and concrete pavement. Crews will then excavate and stabilize about 300 lineal feet of subgrade adjacent to the Montello River.


Oneida County

Highway: US 8 and WIS 47 intersection

Location: City of Rhinelander

Schedule: This project is complete. Crews will be in the area completing punch list items.

Oneida and Vilas counties

Highway:  US 51

Location: 3rd Avenue to Tuckaway Drive

Schedule: This project is complete.

Traffic impacts:  All lanes of US 51 are open to traffic, however there will be some short-term lane closures as needed so crews can complete punch list work.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews will be completing punch list items. This is the last update for this project.

Highway: Business 51

Location: Mac Arthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: March 18, 2019 to Spring 2020

Traffic impacts:

  • Access to the McDill Boat Landing has been re-opened off Business 51.
  • The intersection of Tommy’s Turnpike and Business 51 has been reopened.
  • The intersections of Willow Street and Business 51 and Cedar Street and Business 51 are closed. Willow Street and Cedar Street will remain closed until concrete pavement and curb and gutter is completed.
  • Pedestrian traffic is utilizing the sidewalk on the east side of Business 51 and the south side of County HH.
  • Traffic on Business 51 has been reduced to one lane in each direction between Mac Arthur Way and Minnesota Avenue.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week:

  • Crews will pour the concrete pavement in the intersections of Cedar Street and Willow Street.
  • Crews will continue forming and begin pouring the remaining turn lanes on southbound Business 51 from County HH to Tommy’s Turnpike.
  • Crews will setup and prepare to pour the sidewalk from Precision Glass to Elm Street.
  • Crews will continue installing new street lights along Business 51 from Elm Street to Tommy’s Turnpike.

Shawano County

Highway: WIS 22

Location: Between County B and Zingler Street & Main Street and County BE

Schedule: July 15, 2019 to November 1, 2019

Traffic impacts: Single lane closures and 10-foot lane widths on WIS 22 between County HHH/Airport Road and County BE will continue through mid-November.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week: Crews continue work on Murray Creek Box Culvert.

Vilas County

Highway: US 45

Location: WIS 70 East to WIS 70 West/ WIS 17 North

Schedule: August 12, 2019 to October 21, 2019

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter one lane traffic in both eastbound and westbound lanes on US 45/Pine Street between WIS 70 east and WIS 70 west intersections. Motorists should expect travel delays.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews plan to complete all restoration and signing by Friday, October 18. The new thermoplastic coating for snowmobile crossing at Railroad Street is planned to be completed Monday, October 21.

Waupaca County

Highway: WIS 49

Location: Anderson Road to Peterson Road, village of Iola.

Schedule: October 3, 2019 to October 31, 2019

Traffic impacts:  Milling and paving operations are currently underway. This has traffic has been reduced to one lane, 12 feet in width, under a flagging operation during working hours. After working hours, the roadway is opened back up to a two-lane configuration will full travel widths.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Paving operations will begin on Wednesday, October 16 and carry through Friday, October 18. Saturday, October 17 will be utilized for paving should a day be lost due to weather. Shouldering operation, centerline rumble strip milling, and pavement marking will take place the week of Monday, October 21, 2019.


Waupaca and Wood counties

Highway: WIS 110

Location: Between Wolf River Drive and WIS 96 in Fremont

Schedule: July 8, 2019 to November 22, 2019

Traffic impacts at WIS 110, Wolf River Bridge: Motorists can expect to encounter one lane crossing the bridge with temporary signals from July 8 thru November 22.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Bridge deck preparation will be completed, and crews will work to overlay the southbound lanes on the bridge, weather permitting.

Highway: WIS 80 and WIS 186

Location: WIS 80 between Rabbit lane and Ubinger Road; WIS 186 between Apple Road and Jefferson Road

Schedule: October 14, 2019 through November 1, 2019

Traffic impacts: WIS 80: Motorists can expect to encounter one lane crossing the work zone with temporary signals and a maximum width of 11 feet. WIS 186: Motorists can expect a detour route on Monday Oct 21, 2019 from 7a.m. to 7 p.m. south of Vesper. Traffic will be detoured via County HH and WIS 73. Motorists can also expect a flagging operation for the rest of the week.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: WIS 80: Contractor will complete the removal and replacement of two culverts south of Pittsville under the northbound lane. The contractor anticipates paving over the culverts next week. WIS 186: The contractor plans to remove an existing culvert south of Vesper on Monday and will pave the removal area next week.
