3M and Colby Metal honored at fourth annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards

WAUSAU – A pair of businesses received awards at the Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards held on Tuesday, October 22 at the Stoney Creek Hotel & Conference Center in Rothschild. The Chamber honored manufacturers that have demonstrated excellence in their business at the event.

3M received the 2019 Manufacturing Excellence Award in the large manufacturer category and Colby Metal Inc received the award in the small to medium manufacturer category. The large manufacturer category included those businesses with more than 300 employees, while the small to medium manufacturer category included businesses with less than 300 employees.

“Receiving this Manufacturing Excellence Award is a great honor for all of us at Colby Metal.” said Mark Viegut, President of Colby Metal Inc. “Our mission statement is to create a strong partnership and provide superior service to our valued customers while empowering our employees and local communities to prosper. This award is affirmation that we are headed in the right direction to accomplish our mission!”

“The 3M Wausau site has been a proud part of the community for 90 years and we could not be happier about receiving the 2019 Large Manufacturer Award.” said Mario Diaz, Plant Manager at 3M. “We take great pride in our roofing granules, part of our mission to improve people’s lives and getting recognized by the region’s business community just makes it all even better.”

Dr. Robert M. Meyer, Chancellor Emeritus of UW-Stout was the keynote speaker. WSAW/WZAW’s Holly Chilsen served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

The event was part of the Chamber’s celebration of Manufacturing Month. The recipients displayed excellence in contributing to the growth in the region’s economy, operations, innovation, workplace culture, quality jobs, supply chain management and commitment to the region.

Gamber-Johnson LLC and Domtar Paper Company LLC received awards in 2018, while J & D Tube Benders Inc and Linetec received awards in 2017 and Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats and Greenheck received awards in 2016 in the Small to Medium and Large categories respectively.
