Prep roundup: East swimming splashes Merrill; West, East pick up volleyball wins

WAUSAU– The Wausau East Lumberjacks pulled out a 96-74 win over Merrill in Wisconsin Valley Conference girls swimming action on Thursday.

For East, it was their fourth conference win, bringing them to 4-2 in the Valley, while Merrill falls to 3-3.

East’s Emma Clifford had a memorable evening, claiming first in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM.

Clifford was also a member of the Lumberjacks’ first place 200 freestyle relay team.

Meanwhile, East’s Sydney Schjoneman took first in the 100 backstroke and was a key cog in the Lumberjacks’ 200 medley relay.

SPASH 135, Wausau West 35

STEVENS POINT– SPASH took care of business against the Warriors, winning a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls swimming clash.

SPASH took first place in each event.

The Panthers improve to 6-0 in the Valley, while West falls to 0-6.

Volleyball

Wausau West 3, Eau Claire Memorial 0

WAUSAU– The Wausau West Warriors cruised in the regional semifinal round of the WIAA tournament, downing Eau Claire Memorial 3-0.

The Warriors were led by Robyn Kirsch, who recorded 17 kills.  Kirsch also had 13 digs.

Meanwhile, Cassandra Oelke had 13 digs and Kylie Buchberger led the team with 16 digs.

Grace Michalske paced the Warriors with 35 assists.

West moves on to face SPASH in the regional final, which will be played on Saturday at SPASH.

Merrill 3, D.C. Everest 1

MERRILL– The Bluejays got off to a quick start, defeating the Evergreens 25-20 in set one, but Everest stormed back to take the second set 25-12.

Merrill cruised in the final two sets 25-15, 25-10 to take the win.

The Bluejays will move on in the regional; they will face Hudson on October 26.

Wausau East 3, Marshfield 1

MARSHFIELD– The Wausau East Lumberjacks upset Marshfield in regional action.  Marshfield came in as the #7 seed, while East was seeded #10.

East took the first two sets 25-21, 25-22.  Marshfield clawed back for a 13-25 win in set 3.

The Lumberjacks came through in set four with a 25-20 victory.

East will move on to face #2 Eau Claire North on October 26.
