MARSHFIELD – Wausau Newman Catholic moved one step from a ninth consecutive trip to the Division 4 state tournament Thursday night, but it wasn’t easy.
Columbus Catholic gave the Cardinals all they could handle in the sectional semifinals before Newman Catholic ultimately prevailed in five grueling sets 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-25,15-6 to keep its season alive.
The Cardinals will meet Wabeno Area/Laona, a 25-12, 25-12,25-15 winner over Gresham Community, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Suring for a berth at state.
Newman Catholic will be looking for its fifth state title to add to the four-year run it enjoyed from 2013-16.

NEW RICHMOND – A magical ride through the postseason came crashing to an end for the Warriors who were swept at the hands of the Huskies in a Division 1 sectional semifinal.
North ended the season for West with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 victory to move step away from a trip to the state tournament in Green Bay. The Warriors concluded their season with a 28-9 record.
The Huskies will take on River Falls, a 25-11, 25-15, 25-15 winner over Hudson, in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Saturday at Wausau West.
Junior Grace Michalske handed out 24 assists to pace the attack for West. Robyn Kirsch, a junior, finished with a team-high 14 kills. Kiley Deaton and Maddie Hauer helped out with four kills apiece.
Senior Jenna Rusch led three players in double figures with 16 digs. Michalske added 12 digs and Kirsch had 11.

Wisconsin Valley Conference Meet
WISCONSIN RAPIDS – D.C. Everest erased any doubts Thursday night about who the best team was in the WVC this season.
Behind a pair of winning performances each from Sara Mayer and Maddie Van Ermen, DCE brought home the title at the conference meet to go with the regular season dual meet championship.
Van Ermen doubled her pleasure by claiming the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes. 12.78 second. She also picked up a first in the 100 breastroke (1:06.52).
Mayer did her part by winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.46 and also topping the field in the 100 freestyle (53.36).
Bethany Rahn chimed in with a conference championship in the 200 freestyle for the Evergreens with a time of 1:54.68. DCE also earned wins in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay events.
Wausau East’s Emma Clifford can call herself a Valley champion after finishing first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.99. She also grabbed a runner-up result in the 100 backstroke (1:03.13).
