Newman wins again, Everest eliminated

WAUSAU– Newman Catholic continued its run of dominance as the Cardinals cruised to a 61-25 Level 2 victory over Gibralter.

Newman will move on to face Belmont in the WIAA Level 3 state semifinal.  That contest will take place on November 8 at Brietenbach Stadium in Middleton.

Thomas Bates led the Cardinals with 287 rushing yards and five touchdowns, while brother Ben Bates took charge of the passing game with 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Charlie McCarty was the team’s leading receiver with 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Newman already has one win over Belmont this season, a 52-20 victory on October 18.

Belmont advanced with a narrow 18-14 win over Oakfield on Friday to advance to Level 3.

Appleton North 42, D.C. Everest 6

APPLETON– The Evergreens’ run through the playoffs came to a halt on Friday as they were upended by Appleton North in Level 2 of the WIAA playoffs.

North will move on to play Kimberly on November 8 in Level 3 action.

Everest ends the season at 6-5.

The Evergreens fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter before scoring six points in the second frame.

Ethan Ostrowski accounted for the Evergreens’ lone score on a rushing touchdown from one yard out.

Ostrowski finished the game with 104 yards passing and 19 rushing yards.  Delton Zuleger led the team with 50 rushing yards.

Matthew Schecklman threw for 182 yards and four touchdowns for the Lightning, while Cal Martini rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Heran added 108 receiving yards and two touchdowns for Appleton North.
