WAUSAU — Eighty Wausau School District fourth- and fifth-graders recently attended the three-day Wausau School District Elementary Gifted and Talented (GT) Leadership Conference.
This conference brings together fourth and fifth grade student leaders for intensive leadership training. The sessions, held at the Boys & Girls Club of the Wausau Area, explored what it means to be a leader, the characteristics of leadership and the traits they see in themselves and classmates that will help them develop into strong leaders.
Insight was also provided by guest community speakers, including WAOW news and meteorology teams, Trig’s, 3M, State College of Beauty Culture, Yach’s Body and Custom, Janke’s Bookstore, Marathon County Public Library, Sheriff Scott Parks with the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department, Wisconsin Woodchucks Baseball Club and Tricia Zunker, Wausau School Board President.
Wausau West and Wausau East High School students also shared their own personal stories of leadership opportunities and encouraged the young leaders to get involved in clubs and activities. Teachers for the fourth-grade conference were Emily Martin, John Marshall Elementary, and Chuck Schlitz, retired Wausau School District teacher. Teachers for the fifth-grade conference were Matt Adams, Wausau School District GT teacher, and Cheryl Borta, Wausau School District GT leadership coordinator and teacher.
