Police in Wausau confirm they responded late Saturday to a report of shots fired on the city’s southeast side but have so far not located the source of the suspected shooting.

Wausau Police say they responded at roughly 8:30 p.m. to the area of the 900 block of Lake View Drive for the report. Officers immediately responded to the area and began searching the neighborhood and speaking with neighbors.

A portion of both Lake View Drive and Bertha Streets were closed off for more than an hour while officers combed the neighborhood. Witnesses tell Wausau Pilot and Review they heard at least two “big bangs.” Officers scoured through yards searching for signs of a possible gunman, but came up empty so far.

“While we were able to confirm neighbors heard the noises we were unable to locate the source of the noises or locate signs of a shooting having occurred,” Wausau Police stated.

An investigation remains underway.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department and Everest Metro Police Department assisted in the response.

This is a developing story and will be updated as additional information is received.
