Lemongrass Asian Fusion Restaurant will ask city leaders Monday to extend their liquor license as they complete extensive renovations to the former J. Gumbo’s space in downtown Wausau.

The new 3,900 square foot restaurant expects to open by mid-January, with renovations completed by mid December. Lemongrass Asian Fusion is owned by Tuan Uong and Hong Duong, who also own Gloss Nail Bar in Rib Mountain. Their partner is Uong’s sister-in-law, Regina Navarro, who runs a similar restaurant in California.

J. Gumbo’s, located in the Third Street Lifestyle Center at 316 Third St., opened in August 2015 and closed April 30. Dejan Adzic, an attorney for the property owner, filed a small claims/eviction action April 5 against the restaurant, which is owned by John Jacobs and Keith Malwitz. Court records show the owners owe $70,114.50 in back rent and associated fees, an amount that has not yet been satisfied.

Lemograss initially expected to open in the fall.
